Q&A with Colette
As her brilliant new album hits the streets we get a quick low-down on the lady behind the music...

Hi Colette, can you introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
I'm a singer/DJ originally from Chicago. I've been living in Los Angeles for 7 years now.

You have a signature style when performing; how would you describe your sound?
I play a mixture of music from deep to funky to techy. My ears have definitely been influenced by my upbringing in Chicago. I've always gravitated towards light and pretty melodies that sit on top of funky basslines.

As a classically trained singer; was it was a natural progression to sing over your sets? How did the crowd react when you first tried this out?
I started studying classical voice and listening to house music around the same time. After high school I moved away from arias and focused on freestyling over house tracks. I was fortunate enough to get a good reaction from crowds when I first started as it encouraged me to keep making music.

What is your favourite possession that you wouldn’t leave home without?
Unfortunately, my mobile phone. It's a blessing and a curse.

Your second artist album ‘Push’ is due out on Om Records in August; how did you approach the album?
I wanted to make a record that was geared towards the dancefloor. My first album Hypnotized had house and downtempo, but I wasn't able to perform any of the slower songs on the road. There are still a few slow jams on Push like the collaboration I did with Black Spade, but Push is mainly for the club.

You album tour stretches through until December 2007; do you have a favourite city to perform? And where do you have the craziest fans?
I'm playing with my band for six of the shows and I'm most excited (and nervous) about playing in my hometown. It's an amazing line-up with Derrick Carter and DJ Heather. Some of the craziest fans are definitely on the west coast. People just go wild with their outfits and their dancing. It's incredible.

As a female performer and one that has a close association with Mac cosmetics; do you have an essential beauty tip for the girls?
I always carry moisturizer with me and a tube of mascara. Keeping my skin hydrated is essential and a tiny bit of mascara always helps me out when I've only slept a few hours on a plane.
