DJ Device Interview

Here’s a quick Q&A session with DJ Device, the man behind the recent hit featuring Lisa Millett - One Day You Want Me on HiLife Records.

How did the collaboration with Lisa Millett come about?
I was actually producing a track for a mutal friend which Lisa was vocalling. We hit it off really well and decided to do some other work together.

Who wrote the song?
Lisa wrote the song.

You have had a great response to "One Day You'll Want Me" has the success of this track inspired you to get another release out soon?
Yes, I've got an EP coming out in the next few weeks, actually it's project for my own label Hilife Records with another producer DJ Kaya. I'm also mid-way through an album 'Tonic Grooves Vol 3' which will be out in the summer.

Booker T's remix of the song is very good, did you ask him to remix it cos' you like his style or is he a friend?
Me & Booker go way back, I like his style and I knew this was a project he would love to get involved in!

Can you see yourself teaming up for another track with Lisa Millett in the future?
Yes, we will be doing a follow up to 'One Day You Want Me' later in the year and I've just finished a remix on Code Red of  Lisa's 'When I'm dancin'

When did you get the djing bug?
Many many many moons ago as a young boy!

Where were you first spinning?
In a club called faces, sunday nights in Homerton Hackney.

How long have you been producing?
Since the early 90's

What inspired you when you were young? Has it changed much over time?
There wasn't once particular thing or person that inspired me, it was more like a jounery that I was involved in. Watching the emergence of the dance music scene in the UK take off for example Sunrise, Engery, Biogoly and all the big open air underground parties!!
Has it changed? Not really my love for dance music has definately grown over the years.

What other productions would we know you from?
In the 1990's I co-owned Vice Versa Records. You may know  'I'm coming home' feat. Michael Watford  and  ' You know I missed you'  feat. Fayelene Brown both released on Azuli Records. We also done a lot of mixes for MCA records, Freetown records Polydor.

Did you experience the acid house/Rave scene?
Yes! This is where my love for dance music begun!

Can we find you playing anywhere regular in London?
Not at the moment no.

Who do you respect the most in the house scene at the moment?
Me!!!!!!! he he

What's next on the agenda for DJ Device?
At the moment I'm concentrating all my energies on establishing HiLife Records.

Who would you most like to work with in the future?
I'd like to do some work with Keny Bobien, Michelle Weeks, Kathy Brown......

Who else is involved with Hi Life Records?
There are few of us invloved; Dj Kaya, RK, Dj H, Altus & Dj C.

How would you describe the sound of the label?
We are still defining the sound, all the dj/producers invloved have their own unqiue style!

What's the most crap record you have ever bought? (be honest!)
I only try to buy what I like

Do you have any other interests away from music?
