What
was your introduction to music?
I guess it started when i was 5 years old, i could tell you who
the artist was, who he/she was produced by and the label they were
on at the time... thats how much i was into music, i didnt get into
any sports growing up just music.
Was
your music taste nurtured by family influences or was it a natural
progression if interests?
My mother is blind so i was raised by both my grandmother and mum,
so that meant listening to alot and i do mean alot of old band stand
music, classical, jazz, blues, gospel of course, popular music didn't
get alot of play in my houseÊ thats why i appreciate every form
of music, because down the line music is all relative.
Who
was your first musical hero?
Nat king Cole, then Stevie Wonder, Then Quincy Jones in no particular
order i cant pick one cause all of them affected me immediately,....
now my heroes areÊDj Spinna, Neptunes, Madlib, Prefuse73, Louie
Vega,Kenny Dope, Jazzanova, Touch Of Jazz, Dj Gregory, Joe Clausell
and J Dilla aka Jay Dee.
You
grew up in Baltimore and started DJing at the tender age of 13,
how did it all start for you?
College parties i did alot of them then i started doing a college
radio show, that led to doing a very popular black radio station
V103
How
did you progress onto House Music?
I always had a love for house music, when you grew up djing here
you had to be able to play house, hip hop classics and reggae, but
house music always felt good , it made me feel better about the
world, life,it was kinda like a better R&B
We
can now hear you play on the superb HandzOnRadio.com radio station,
is that a long term thing for you?
I hope so ,me and Dj Chuck have a very good relationship, im there
forever.
How
do you get on with presenting on the Radio?
I have a following in Baltimore and i wanted to do something different
than just have someone play a mix by me.
Is
there any difference in the way/style you play on the radio to when
your playing out in a club.? Definetly, i play alot different
on the radio because at a club i have instant energy from the crowd.
You
have quite a distinctive style to your mixing, do you like to use
fx units and samplers when your playing out?
Hell yes i like to freak the crowd out, with giving them something
new.
By
now you have played some of the best clubs around the world, is
there a certain club/country/crowd that you look forward to playing
in/to?
Right now i have to say i like playing home at the Sky Lounge, they're
so receptive to my playing, i also like to play @ angel delite with
the slammin boys, Milk in Ireland, last but not least i like playing
at the ambassade in Lyon
What
is your ideal length to play a set, is the usual 2hours enough or
do you simply like to play as long as possible!?
I would like to play long as possible but, i don't complain cause
playing is a blessing in itself.
Is
there anywhere that you haven't played and would like to.?
Japan,South Africa.
Do you have a DJ residency anywhere?
Yes here in Baltimore,@ the Sky Lounge on Thursdays, people always
come because they never know what im gonna pull out my bag, i always
do at least two/three redits just to play on that night.
Where
can we catch you playing over the next few months?
Who knows... you can always look to see on my website!!
Can
we expect to see you over in the UK sometime during 2004?
Yes Hopefully sometime soon.
What's
your favourite track that you've produced or remixed?
There are three in particular, The Ride and Outta kontrol are on
my Ride Ep Coming out on Defected Records and a track called S.I.L.U.
coming out on Ricanstruction Label. These track are "The kohesive
sound".
Who
would be the most mainstream artist you have worked with?
Ann Nesby, a beautiful soul, and a big sister to me and Shaun Escoffery,
one cool ass dude, a one take kinda guy.
You
have been involved with some memorable releases on the Basement
Boys label, how did you come to join with them?
I already had a label with a couple of my friends "Unruly records",
but i always wanted to move up in the music world,Spen and I worked
at V103 (Radio Station) together so i would bug him about doing
drum track for his upcoming project (Jasper Street Album). He let
me do some drum programming for the track "Temptation" and I produced
a track E.B.W.2.R.T.W.Ê that he liked and used for the album. After
a time we worked on Mary J. Blige "Beautiful" and decided we worked
together nicely, the rest is History..
You
have now formed Kohesive Productions, how long has Kohesive been
going and what would you say is the formula/style behind it?
Kohesive has been running for about a year now, and i really don't
have a formula yet, i like to make music that is "out of the box".
I will also so say that a lot of my stuff is definetly beat driven.
How
long do you spend in the studio or does it differ from production
to production?
Yeah sometimes an idea will come and i can put it down in a half
hour and sometimes i have to listen to the idea for a while, most
of the time im done within a week.
Can
you tell us what are you working on at the moment?
Im working on a remix for Mixture records andÊ aÊ "Sandcastles"
redit for Ibadan records.
How
do you see the scene at the moment, it seems that we have been
through a bit of a low point in general throughout the whole of
club culture recently, do you feel things are picking up again.?
W ell thats the question at hand, I can see things are picking
up slightly, but with this music not reaching young america, that
does'nt help, thats why i gear myself towards the younger crowd
because i don't want this music to die with me.
How
is the scene currently back home? I know that you have a very
strong scene in Baltimore? Yeah, its getting strong.
Can
you tell us about your association with the "Soul Fiesta" parties
and Black Books Cafˇ.
Well the owner of BBC is a very good person and he want's just
as i do to keep this house thing alive, his website is devoted
to the house happenings of Baltimore, after meeting him I wanted
to help him in any way i could, that led to doing mixes for his
site to him doing an actual party "Soul fiesta" that I play at.

hot baths.... yeah thats it, question is, WHEN do you relax? Hardly!!!
Lastly
are you a man that can shake your thing or are you a man that
possesses two left feet?!
