How much sleep have you had this week?
Probably about an average of 5 hours per day, sometimes its 4 hours in a bed and 2 hours in a plane or something like that. I get very little sleep and it’s always like that.
How would you describe your personality? Would you say that you were shy like Clarke Kent from Superman or would you think that your more crazy like Jim Carey.
If really had to choose between the two I would probably say I was shyer, but I have my moments. Sometimes I’m a bit crazy, I’m not to be too shy generally speaking, I like to talk to people and exchange points. I’m quite focussed in general. So really I’m a little bit of both.
Where do you think you’re more famous? The UK? or France?
In France by far unfortunately!
If you were walking down the street in France would people recognise you as a pop star?
Yeah well I was on the train just an hour ago and a couple of people came up to me for autographs.
Do you ever have any fans that you try and avoid? Do you have any bad fans?
No I have only good fans, I’m not to that level where people get hysterical, I just have people who say ‘ahh I know this guy, he’s the guy in the crazy video with that black guy’.
Is there anything new that you want to talk about in the world of Martin Solveig at the moment? Anything that’s really exciting for you?
Yeah Sure, I am ‘In the House’ a great deal – ie playing a lot of gigs for Defected. well Martin Solveig in the House. I’ve been working on new tracks and edits and remixes and stuff like that you know. And that’s the exciting thing about my professional life at this time.
How would you clearly describe your DJ style so we can understand you a lot more, musically.
I’m very hard to understand musically, I have a very versatile and eclectic kind of style. Very eclectic for sure. I’ve always tried to be quite eclectic in my selections, mainly because I like to play the type of music in a club that I would like to hear as if I was part of the crowd as a dancer. I don’t like the idea of one style, not to narrow and play one style for two or three hours. I try to bring a lot of diversity and to get the people excited and surprised, I now that some DJ’s that I love are playing a straight kind of style and they are building their set with other ideas in others way. But my idea of building a set is based on building the surprise with a track.
What is one of the records that you’re putting in the middle of your set at the moment that’s a surprise?
At this time, I play a track by the Charlatans, called NYC, its very close to the Clash in the style and it’s a mix of funk and rock, it’s a very good track and quite a surprise for the people that I play to.
When you come to England you must learn a lot about British clubbers, how would you describe the typical British clubber?
The British clubbers are friendly and educated musically. They are definitely the more true people to the house music scene that you can find in the world, at least in Europe, which means that they are the house music culture and this has become quite rare to find. For example France Italy and even Spain, who like to party a lot and don’t really care about following the movement of house music or R&B or whatever. They just want to party with whats hot, and in the uk there a huge house music scene. That’s one typical thing about the UK.
Your songs are in English, so in France do French people get them? Do they get what you’re singing about?
No in France it is the complete opposite, it’s the worst place for house music meaning that is really a place where they are a bit backwards, especially from R&B. It is very very R&B and Hip-Hop characterised.
What about Indie guitar music how is that in France?
Its very popular in festivals that we have in France over the summer, and we have all the cool bands, that’s really a good thing for music in France, but it is mainly R&B.
Can you give me 3 really hot tunes for you right now?
• MC Mellowdee ‘And you don’t stop’
• Bumcello ‘Dalila’
• Copyright ‘We Can Rise’
Sure, I’d say my first one would be MC Mellowdee and the track is called ‘And You Don’t Stop’, it’s actually a collaboration with Julien Jabre. it is a real hip house house track,a little bit in the old style like ‘Talking all that Jazz’ by Stetsasonic, in that style. Then I’d say a track by Copyright ‘We Can Rise’ and then I’d say Bumcello Dalila, my latest production it’s a remix that I did.

The Defected In The House mix that you are doing, do you think it will be a good introduction for people who haven’t tried house music before?
No, not really.
That’s fair enough, why do you think that?
A tricky question, because both CD’s are not all house music. The main CD is nearly 100% music but it still includes some old school stuff, and lets say that it is a good introduction to my kind of house music not a general view on house music. Generally house music, for example Sandy Rivera, those guys I think are more pure house artists. I have this feeling since working in music that I have doing music that is on the edge of house and funk. And so that is my speciality and it is also why I sometimes don’t think I am not a typical house artist.
So you’re saying that that first cd is more club style and the second cd how is that?
I’d say it’s not one chill one dance they are both CD’s you can dance to. But I’d say the main CD is for a big room, the kind of set I’d do in a big room, like 1500 people or more. And the other CD is the kind of music I’d play in a room of 200 people, early in the night to get it started.
Are you working on any new singles at the moment and also do you have any new artist album plans?
I have a lot of projects, although I am coming to the end of a life project called Hedonist (my last album) a few more releases around this project, especially the cheery on the cake which I have produced, It’s a track by Lee fields which is exclusive to the compilation, it’s a tribute to Ray Charles - I’ve got a woman it’s not a house track, it’s more of an urban track you know. From that point, I’m starting to welcome on two big, big projects. One will be my next album Personal and the other will be the mixture album. So that’s what I’m working on after the compilation. I have a couple of singles still to do on the album. Hedonist is almost gold in France now! It’s done 65,000 copies and we need 10 more to go gold.
Where will we find you DJ-ing regularly this year?
Because it is the summer tour and everything. But in the usual spots like Barcelona, Croatia, France, Corsica, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy and around the Mediterranean.
That’s pretty good! You also have a tour planned in the UK right? around the album?
This will be in September or October, more like October actually. I normally would start a tour for the Defected album in the first weekend in October. I will start at Canvas on October 4th, which I am very excited about. Then I have a couple of gigs in the UK over November and December.
