Whats your real name?
My real name is Victor Font.

Where are you based?
I live in the lower part of Manhatten

What are the happening clubs at the moment in new york for you?
I love to hang out at Cielo, I like to go out and check out the feeling of the dance floors and whats hot musically. This gives me the basis of what I want to do in the studio.

I’m really surprised that you never came up through a Hip Hop route.
I always loved hip hop, that was the first thing that I learned when I was young. The first record I bought was Bismarky – ‘Make the Music With Your Mouth’.

How did you get the bug for house music?
I got the bug by going to this club called ‘The world’, My Aunt was a bouncer there, She knew I was coming out and every week she hooked me up. The DJ’s at the time were mixing it all up, from hip hop to soulful house music.

So how long have you been on the scene?
I have been on the scene since I was sixteen or seventeen years old, that’s over 20 years now, as far as being in the business, well that’s more like 10 or 11 years.

How would you describe your sound as a producer at the moment?
My sound is FRESH! I try and set myself apart from everybody else in this business.

As a producer do you play instruments, do you have any classical training in music?
For me it’s almost better that I do things by ear, the base, the drums you hear is all me, I do know the basics of music but I could be a lot more fluent!

So whats your best musical talent?
Writing, this is my best musical talent. I love to write songs, I love to write to music, I am getting really good at that. The best challenge I get is from writing songs.

What do you think that you would have been doing?
I think that I would have been in marketing.

How exactly did Louie Vega help you in your career?
I really didn’t know what type of house music I wanted to do until I realised that the type of house that Louie was playing at the time was exactly the type of house that I wanted to do. He showed me, so he became the forefront of me finding myself musically.

How did you hook up with him, what was the process?
I managed to get the chance to do the lights for Louie’s set. It was Louies first to meet a light guy who knew his sound and could work the lights in time. He saw that and was so impressed he said ‘hey yo, here’s my card, call me’,  and the following week after that he flew me to Miami for my very first music winter conference and I have been to every one since!

Inevitably you were signed onto his label, how did it progress from there?
I started working in the office at first, this lasted for 3 years, then I moved onto a marketing company for 4 years. I wasn’t making music at this time, I was still practising being a DJ and making mix tapes. Production did not come until 3 or four years ago.

What did you learn from Louie?
It wasn’t just Louie that I learned from, it was Kenny Dope too, I learned that it took a lot of time, literally these guys were in the studio every day, Louie would wake up in the morning, come straight to the office, find out what there was to do and then they were gone.

You have just set up your own record label, can you tell me a little but about the philosophy of that record label your know, why you pick up records, how you pick up records?
‘Soul Channel Music’ is me and Alex Alvarez  known together as ‘the dual’, and we just decided to make our own label, Alex approached me about making a label and us making music and putting it out for ourselves so we just decided to go for it.

Is it just your stuff that your putting out or are you putting out other peoples work too?
Right now its just us.

What other styles does the label cover then?
We have some hip hop, some rnb, were working on funk miss patty’s album, its everything from house to rnb to funk.
It's really interesting because you were mentioning Alex Alveras now and this brings me on to ‘da bump’ now you obviously produced that together but tell me what is the story behind that record,
I had Alex came to my house to do a record for the album the track was layed out, I came up with everything as far as the lyrics but I couldnt think of a chorus, so I started to think of something to rhyme to da da diddy bump bump and I couldn’t.
I just said you know what lets just run with that and let me try to figure something out in the meantime. I recorded it and I was like you know what, lets just use that- and we kept it.

I am going to move on now to your album. I guess this is you first artist album right?
Yeah this is my first album.

Right lets start with the title, why did you call it welcome home?
‘Welcome Home’ is basically letting the world know that whoever buys my album is in my house, it is my duty as a host to show you the music that I came from.

I hear you, how long did it take to put it together?
It took me like a good 7 or 8 months as far as getting  the foundation together and getting it to where I wanted it to go, I wanted some Hip Hop and some R&B I didn’t want to do Dance music over the whole album.

What are your favourite parts of the whole album?
Out of the whole album I have to say ‘On The Grind’ because I surprised myself as an MC it let me know that I can flow in different ways and do things a bit different.

Do you like the way that you sound on the records?
I am my biggest critic I don’t know sometimes I feel like I sound like I have got a cold!

Can you tell me about any contributions from artists on the album?
There are contributions from William Rodriguez, for a 21 year old he to me is going to be the fastest name in the market. He is an incredible talent and I am honoured to have him on my album.

Do you prefer to be a producer or a DJ?
I would like to be in the studio making music I love to DJ but there is no better feeling then creating something then seeing people all over the world respond to it.

Can you tell me about any particularly good DJ’ing experiences you have had lately?
South Africa man, I think it was one of the greatest feelings I have ever had in my life the crowd the energy, 2500 people strong in a big auditorium and we rocked till 6-7am in the morning.

What are your passions outside of music?
I try to stay active and break away from the computer once in a while although I play computer games on my PSP you know just typical man things

What are you going to be doing over the next 2 years?
I am going to be really busy I have a lot of projects I am working with. I am really going to push myself and take risks and I am just up for a challenge as this whole business needs a change so I just want to be different to everybody else.
