Unparalleled in today’s electronic music scene, the ADE attracted a wide range or artists to what was truly the biggest club festival in the world. A crown performance by DJ Tiësto in the famous Paradiso club but also showcases by companies such as Goodlife (f), Rush Hour (nl), Pokerflat (d) and MN2S (uk), often presenting new artists and new music. In total 41 clubs and locations took part in the night program, ranging from 1600+ venues to intimate 150- clubs. Highlights included Cocoon's Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos in The Sand, Bugz In The Attic in Paradiso, Dave Clarke's sold-out show in Melkweg and Dutch DJ Fedde Le Grand, celebrating his international hit 'Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit' in a packed Hotel Arena.
Among the special events at this years ADE were a tribute to synth pioneer Bob Moog, a performance by Ken Ishii with VJ Kaoru Yamamoto in the Van Gogh museum and the Rocket Cinema film festival, whereby DJ's created impromptu soundtracks to famous or infamous films, often in special locations in Amsterdam. BBC's Radio One dedicated the Friday Pete Tong show to the ADE, with performances by Armin van Buuren and others from the Panama club in Amsterdam, and Holland Radio 3fm covered all three nights of the festival.
New business models were one of the main topics at the conference, with panels focussing on games, syncs & downloads as potential sources of income for electronic musicians: 'You have to play the game the way it's played nowadays' said Beatport's Jonas Tempel on new digital developments. Artists such as Paul van Dyk (d) and Armin van Buuren (nl) nowadays control a large proportion of their business themselves with a tight professional unit, often not just comprising record company and management but also a radio station and/or music publishing. Van Buuren at the Pete Tong-led artist debate at the ADE: 'You need a good plan and define what you want to achieve.' In his own panel, US DJ Josh Wink also noted the downside: "It sucks to be a president: as a DJ/promoter/producer, you just can't please everybody".
