It’s 2007 and Hip-Hop is nearly 30 years young… it’s hard to identify exactly when deejays like Kool Herc stopped simply playing other people’s records and began to invent their own genre by scratching, cutting and mixing more than one record together, but this year’s induction of Grandmaster Flash in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the only Hip Hop / Rap act to have done so) has certainly confirmed Hip Hop’s status in the music world if it ever needed to!
Since 1979 there have been enough great rap records to fill 100 compilations, but in ‘Vintage Grooves: Old School Hip Hop Vol. 1’ you’ll find a whistle stop tour through the highlights of hip-hop’s first ten magic years. Welcome home, and happy listening.

From Vintage Grooves come their latest offering in the form of ‘Old School Hip Hop’ a double CD compilation comprising of 24 genuine real Hip Hop tunes that are not to be confused with the commercial plop played to death currently on a lot of compilations these days!! Oh no not here sonny Jim! Here we have the real deal with Disc One bringing together some of the early cuts from Grand Master Flash & Sugarhill records featuring heavily and although considered ‘samey’ are pure gold for the true ‘B-Boys & B-Girls’!
Disc Two then brings us through to the 80’s to the 90’s with the likes of the 45 King, Digital Underground, Mantronix just to name a few..The Digital Underground ‘Humpty Dance’ track has, in my view one of the best growling bass-lines ever recorded! Luckily for me I have a good sound system to appreciate the pure quality of this but be warned, if your subs aren’t up to it they’ll soon suffer!
Overall this CD is only for the purists, the true fan of real Hip Hop and it’s roots.. Don’t expect any bitches, Hoe’s or ‘check the ice around my neck in my Lamborghini Gallardo in this compilation! If that’s your thing then go buy some shitty ‘wack’ CD down at your local retailer and have no imagination.. Clear your furniture for this one B-Boys & B-Girls as you’ll be doing the Windmill again in no time.! - Word's: Paul Buckley
